GTM Intelligence – Privacy Policy

Overview

GTM Intelligence (“the extension”) is a Chrome browser extension designed to help Google Tag Manager users visualize variable dependencies. We are committed to protecting your privacy and being transparent about our data practices.

Simple Summary: We don’t collect, store, or transmit any of your personal data. Everything stays on your device.

What Data We Collect

We collect ZERO personal data.

GTM Intelligence does not collect, store, transmit, or share any:

Personal information
Browsing history
Analytics data
Usage statistics
Tracking information
User identifiers

Local Storage

The extension uses Chrome’s built-in storage (chrome.storage.sync) to store only the following data locally on your device:

What’s Stored:

Variable names from your GTM container (e.g., “pageUrl”, “userId”)
Boolean values (true/false) indicating which variables you’ve selected

Important Points:

✓ This data never leaves your device ✓ It’s not transmitted to any servers (ours or anyone else’s) ✓ It’s not shared with third parties ✓ It’s used only to remember your selections when you reopen the extension ✓ You can clear it anytime by unchecking variables or uninstalling the extension

Permissions Explained

The extension requires the following Chrome permissions:

1. scripting

Why we need it: To read variable information from Google Tag Manager’s interface and interact with GTM’s checkboxes.

What we do with it:

Read variable names from the GTM page
Check/uncheck GTM checkboxes when you make selections
Extract dependency information (which tags/triggers use which variables)

What we DON’T do: We don’t inject ads, track your activity, or modify GTM data.

2. storage

Why we need it: To remember which variables you’ve selected across browser sessions.

What we do with it:

Save your checkbox selections locally
Restore selections when you reopen the extension

What we DON’T do: We don’t store personal information or send data anywhere.

3. tagmanager.google.com (Host Permission)

Why we need it: The extension only works with Google Tag Manager.

What we do with it:

Access GTM’s interface to read variable data
Make API calls to GTM’s endpoints (e.g., tagmanager.google.com/api/accounts/.../references) to fetch dependency information
Interact with GTM’s DOM elements

What we DON’T do: We don’t access any other websites or send data to external servers.

Network Activity

The extension makes API requests only to Google Tag Manager’s official endpoints:

Example API call:

https://tagmanager.google.com/api/accounts/[YOUR_ACCOUNT]/containers/[YOUR_CONTAINER]/workspaces/[YOUR_WORKSPACE]/variables/[VARIABLE_ID]/references

Purpose: To retrieve which tags, triggers, and variables reference each variable.

Important:

These requests go directly to Google’s servers
No data is intercepted or sent to our servers
We don’t have servers – we don’t collect anything!

Third-Party Services

We use NO third-party services.

The extension does not include:

❌ Analytics (no Google Analytics, no tracking pixels)
❌ Advertising networks
❌ External CDNs for our code (Font Awesome CDN is only for icons in the UI)
❌ Error reporting services
❌ A/B testing tools
❌ Marketing automation

Data Sharing

We share ZERO data because we collect ZERO data.

We do not:

Sell data to third parties
Share data with advertisers
Transfer data to data brokers
Provide data to analytics companies
Share data with anyone for any reason

There’s simply no data to share!

Your Rights

Since we don’t collect any data, there’s no data to:

Request access to
Request deletion of
Request correction of
Request a copy of

However, if you want to clear the local selections stored in your browser:

Uncheck all variables in the extension
Or uninstall the extension (this clears all local storage)

Children’s Privacy

GTM Intelligence does not knowingly collect information from anyone, including children under 13. Since we don’t collect any data at all, the extension is safe for all ages.

International Users

This extension can be used worldwide. Since all data stays on your device and we don’t collect anything, there are no international data transfer concerns.

Security

While we don’t collect data, we still prioritize security:

✓ All API calls use HTTPS encryption ✓ The extension only accesses tagmanager.google.com ✓ No external code is loaded at runtime ✓ All code is included in the extension package ✓ Chrome’s security model protects your local data

Changes to This Privacy Policy

We may update this privacy policy from time to time to reflect:

Changes to Chrome Web Store requirements
Improvements to the extension
Clarifications of our practices

When we make changes:

We’ll update the “Last Updated” date at the top
Significant changes will be noted in the extension’s release notes
You can always find the latest version at this URL

GTM Intelligence is built with transparency in mind. While not currently open source, we’re committed to privacy-first practices and welcome scrutiny of our data handling.
